We were very proud to host the South Derbyshire Primary School Sports Association's Area Sports Athletics Competition on Friday 29th June.
The Melbourne Sports Park provided a fantastic venue for the second year running. We welcomed eight other school, which meant nearly 300 children gathered together for a warm sunny afternoon of athletics.
The events were Standing Long Jump, Javelin, Distance Run (600m for Yrs 3-4 and 800m for Yrs 5-6), Sprint (80m) and we finished with the exciting Relay. Each child took part in two of the individual events and they all did the Relay.
1st = Melbourne 2nd Pennine Way 3rd Springfield.
We need to say huge thank you to:
Melbourne Sports Partnership and all the clubs for allowing us to have such a super venue. Particular thank to Jane Radcliffe and Duncan for their help on the day.
Active Schools Partnership Team for their help on the day.
Chellaston Academy (Mr Howard and the wonderful Yr 8 Sports Leaders) - their marshalling of the events was excellent and made everything run really smoothly. It was lovely to see some former MJS pupils as well - Lucy Harnden was a great help on the photo finish - please come back next year!
Parents for helping with walking to the event and for their great support.
Miss Armstrong and Mrs Timmings for leading and encouraging the children.
Mrs Bancroft for the super scoresheet spreadsheet and Mrs Whirledge and Mrs Wilkinson for recording all the scores.
The biggest thank you goes to all the children who took part and did their very best with big smiles on their faces. Let's hope it has inspired them to do athletics or just be that be more active in the future.
Here's to 2019!
