Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. International Nurses Day is also celebrated today and we think of all those in caring professions who are helping us.
Florence Nightingale had a close association with Derbyshire; she lived in a house called Lea Hurst which is in a small village called Holloway, near Matlock.
Widely known as 'The Lady with the Lamp', because of her work as a nurse during the Crimean War, she was also a pioneer in the area of hospital hygiene and a statistician. She published books in both of subjects.
